President Trump said on Tuesday that he was going to take a very hard look at the World Health Organization (WHO) and felt like the United States probably should withhold any more funding to this organization.
He said its handling of the coronavirus crisis and alleged role in helping China downplay the severity of the outbreak was responsible for the pandemic.
The president tweeted, “Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on. Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?” “The WHO really blew it, for some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China centric.
The United States is the single largest contributor to the WHO. In 2017, the most recent year for which figures are available, contributed over $500 million, which is just under one-quarter of the organization’s yearly budget.
Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is the Judiciary Committee Chairman and said Tuesday “that his committee would not fund the Who and that if it was left up to him the whole world should send China a bill for the pandemic.”
Mr.Graham indicated Monday that the president will be the one mostly responsible for holding China accountable for the global health crisis in the coming months, and that Donald Trump is the candidate best equipped to continue pressuring Beijing.
