On this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a presidential motorcade in Dallas, Texas.
Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was visiting Texas in an attempt to smooth over frictions in the Democratic Party. The trip was first announced to the public in Sept. 1963, with the exact motorcade route finalized just days before Kennedy arrived.
Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, arrived in Dallas on Nov. 22 and joined Texas Governor John Connally and his wife, Nellie, for a 10-mile motorcade that would take them to a luncheon to meet with civic and business leaders.
Sitting in a Lincoln convertible, the Kennedys and Connallys waved to the large crowd along the way. As the vehicle entered Dealey Plaza and passed the Texas School Book Depository Building, Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots from the sixth floor.
