In a video released today, former President Obama formally endorsed Joe Biden. The endorsement comes one day after his political opponent, Bernie Sanders, offered his endorsement via livestream.
This is a big step in helping his party continue to unify for the fight against President Trump.
“Choosing Joe to be my Vice President was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend,” Obama said. “And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now. He’s someone whose own life has taught him how to persevere; how to bounce back when you’ve been knocked down.”
There had been little doubt that Obama would back his former vice president one Biden was locked in on the nomination, but he had steadfastly withheld any endorsement during the long Democratic Party primary. By remaining out of the public spotlight, Obama hoped to help unify the party once the primary contest had wrapped.
President Donald Trump has been questioning why Obama hadn’t give the endorsement. “I’m sure he’s got to come out at some point because he certainly doesn’t want to see me for four more years,” Trump said last week.
