NFL Ratings TANK During Season Opener Thursday Night, But How Low Did They Go?

The early ratings are in for Thursday night’s NFL season opener and if they are an indication of what’s to come, it is going to be a long season for Roger Goodell. 

The NFL bet the house on going “woke” in order to appease Black Lives Matter and those who worship at the altar of Colin Kaepernick rather than sticking with a formula that has been proven to be successful for one of America’s most enduring brands. 

But the newborn season is already facing stiff headwinds with early television ratings for the game between the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans falling off a cliff. 

According to Deadline Hollywood, the game’s ratings dropped 16.1 percent from last year’s nationally televised opener and could end up being the lowest in a decade.

With the coronavirus pandemic still raging across America, this year’s NFL season opener was as different as night and day from the 100th season kickoff in 2019.

For one thing, as reigning Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs pummeled the Houston Texans 34-20, and the ratings were down — a lot. In early numbers, the primetime NBC game scored a 5.2 among adults 18-49 and 16.4 million viewers between 8-11 p.m. ET.

Now, those numbers for the 8:25-11:30 p.m. ET game will certainly be adjusted upward later, but right now they mark a 16.1% drop over the spectacle of the September 5, 2019 season opener in the advertiser-rich demographic. In an America and an NFL still adjusting to the new normal of live sports in the era of COVID-19, last night’s game also fell 16.1% in total sets of eyeballs from last year’s fast affiliate results.

As of now, the viewership results for the game — in front of 17,000 socially distanced fans at KC’s Arrowhead Stadium — is looking like a 10-year low for the NFL and NBC.

Deadline points out that there will likely be some improvement as the final numbers come in but they are hardly what could be expected from a game showcasing the two of the league’s rising young quarterback stars in Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

The early thumbs-down from fans comes as the NFL touted the playing of the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing” which is widely known as the “Black National Anthem” before “The Star-Spangled Banner” and painted SJW slogans like “END RACISM” in end zones. 

If Goodell and company thought that such phony gestures were going to be a success then Thursday was a wake-up call. 

While the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium was severely limited due to the coronavirus, fans who were in attendance booed both teams when they performed their silly “unity” ceremony before kickoff. 

Prior to that, the Texans spurned Goodell’s Black National Anthem overtures when they stayed in their locker room during the rendition of the song and the Miami Dolphins released a team video saying that they will do likewise in Sunday’s opener against the New England Patriots. 

The tanking ratings are consistent with the last time when the NFL surrendered to the kneelers in 2017 and there is ample evidence that the promotion of toxic far-left politics and BLM propaganda may be well received in Twitter world but it’s quite the opposite in reality.
