Ilhan Omar Demands That Next Stimulus Package Include Money For Non-Citizens

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is demanding that any additional  stimulus package include money for non-citizens, a request that will likely deter any rapid passage of the next round of aid.

The Minnesota Democrat who carried her anti-Semitism into Congress where it spread like a virus released a statement announcing her introduction of legislation designed to get cash into the hands of “mixed status” families.

The first checks will be distributed to those with social security numbers, a detail that has been denounced as racist by Omar’s Squad leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a woman who is incapable of seeing anything through a non-racial prism.

According to a tweet by Omar:

It is absurd and cruel that a taxpaying family with mixed immigration status  could be excluded from this relief during this pandemic.

Today I introduced a bill and led a letter to address this major error.

All Americans need our help right now.

The legislation would presumably cover foreigners who have married U.S. citizens to gain residence in America, sometimes fraudulently.

Via Minneapolis CBS affiliate WCCO, “Coronavirus In Minnesota: Omar Pushes For Relief Checks For Mixed-Status Families”:

According to the Democratic lawmaker’s office, the current stimulus package would not send a $1,200 stimulus check to Americans who filed taxes jointly with someone who does not have a social security number.

“Over 140,000 Minnesotans live in mixed status families of some form,” Omar said, in a statement. “As currently written, many Minnesotans who are in this country legally or part of a mixed status family will not receive any stimulus money, even if one of them has a social security number but the other does not.”

To fix this, Omar introduced a bill Tuesday that would allow mixed families to get relief checks by expanding a special exception for the military.

Meanwhile, Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, is urging that any further relief packages include money for noncitizens.

According to the press release from Omar’s office:

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) today introduced the Recovery Rebates Improvement Act and sent a letter to the Department of Treasury to request guidance on eligibility of recovery rebates. While the recently passed CARES Act provide millions of Americans with direct economic assistance, the bill leaves out many noncitizens and mixed status families—even if members of the family are citizens. The Recovery Rebates Improvement Act fixes the major error by expanding the special rule for the military in the CARES Act. The letter sent to the Department of Treasury addresses the eligibility requirements to clarify how certain taxpayers and dependents can actually receive these payments.

The CARES Act provides a one-time stimulus payment of $1200 for most adults and $500 for children under the age of 17. In order to receive payment, the CARES Act requires identification in the form of a Social Security Number (SSN). Under current statute, married couples filing jointly with any non-SSN identification will not be eligible for the stimulus payment.

“It is absurd and cruel that a taxpaying, mixed status couple or family could be excluded from this relief,” Rep. Omar said. “Over 140,000 Minnesotans live in mixed status families of some form. As currently written, many Minnesotans who are in this country legally or part of a mixed status family will not receive any stimulus money, even if one of them has a social security number but the other does not.”
