As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, some representatives have gone to the extreme in an attempt to prevent further spread throughout their constituencies, only to be exacerbating the issue at large. In what will be a significant step towards opening up the United States economy and rolling back unnecessary lockdown measures mandated for the coronavirus, Republican lawmakers issued their first lawsuit against Democrat Governor Whitmer, who they argue extended a strict lockdown order without the proper authority.
This legal action from Republican leadership is just the first of what could be many lawsuits stemming from excessive lockdown measures, with areas like California being at a very risk of being hit with lawsuits in the future.
Check out what Fox News reported below:
Stay-at-home orders aimed at reducing the spread of coronavirus are now facing legal challenges from residents and state officials alike, alleging that some measures – mostly put in place by Democrats — go too far while the country gradually moves toward reopening.
California alone is facing at least a dozen lawsuits that include claims that the state has unjustly closed down gun shops and religious services, infringed on freedoms of speech and assembly by restricting protests, and one case where a resident alleges that being forced to remain at home constitutes forced detention without due process.
“We’re being challenged,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “All across this country, every single day, governors are being challenged, local health officials are being challenged, and it’s a spirit of collaboration. Those that continue to pursue things that put people in harm’s risk, you have to have stepped up efforts and enforcement and sanctions.”
The Justice Department has also placed their particular focus on those who have made questionable orders for the coronavirus, making it clear that policies that are deemed too “excessive” will not be tolerated for much longer.
While speaking with reporters during an interview earlier this month, Attorney General Barr issued a clear warning to lawmakers, suggesting that as more “lawsuits develop, as specific cases emerge in the state,” the Justice Department will begin to “take a look at them.”
As constitutional rights continue to be infringed upon by authoritarian lawmakers, both members of the Justice Department and the Republican Party are taking legal action to ensure that the unreasonable shutdown will be put to an end.
