The Atlanta Police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks at a Wendy’s parking lot last week was charged with felony murder and other charges, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced Wednesday.
The other police officer on scene also faces three charges, including aggravated assault, Howard said.
Brooks who is a multiple time felon drove to a Wendy’s in Atlanta and passed out in the drive thru causing other cars to have to drive around him because he was drunk.
When officers gave Brooks a field sobriety test, he failed. The officers then went to take Brooks into custody and he fought with the officers, resisted arrest, and stole an officers taser. Brooks then while fleeing attempted to shoot the officer with the taser when the officer fired shots that killed Brooks.
You can watch the video below as Brooks violently resists arrest and assaults the police officers.
“Specifically, (the question is if) Officer Rolfe, whether or not he felt that Mr. Brooks, at the time, presented imminent harm of death or some serious physical injury. Or the alternative is whether or not he fired the shot simply to capture him or some other reason,” Howard said.
“If that shot was fired for some reason other than to save that officer’s life or to prevent injury to him or others, then that shooting is not justified under the law.”
These charges are an absolute disgrace to the justice system in America. What are we saying now, that police officers can’t defend their lives? This is sickening.
