It is a sad state of affairs that on Easter Sunday, freedom of religion is under assault in the United States as never before.
Reports of overzealous governors, mayors and local officials abusing their power during the coronavirus crisis to crack down on public worship are proliferating by the day.
And they have caught the attention of Attorney General William Barr who is justifiably disturbed by what many have seen to be unconstitutional and anti-American efforts to punish worshipers on the holiest weekend of the year.
In a Saturday tweet from Justice Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec, it was revealed that the nation’s top law enforcement official is “monitoring govt regulation of religious services” and that there could be a price to pay for those singling out churches and synagogues.
According to Kupec:
During this sacred week for many Americans, AG Barr is monitoring govt regulation of religious services. While social distancing policies are appropriate during this emergency, they must be applied evenhandedly & not single out religious orgs.
Via The Washington Examiner, “Barr ready to take ‘action’ against states cracking down on religious services”:
Attorney General William Barr is “monitoring” government officials cracking down on religious services amid the coronavirus pandemic and is ready to take “action.”
Department of Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec tweeted Saturday that U.S. citizens should “expect action” next week regarding state officials regulating religious services to enforce social distancing.
The tweet comes during Holy Week and Passover, when Christians and Jews typically congregate in places of worship and with family.
Governors across the country have implemented stay-at-home orders or social distancing rules, often preventing worshipers from attending services.
Religious leaders around the country have pushed back on such orders and have thus faced fines and even arrests.
With large portions of the country under lockdown, Americans are getting a taste of what it is like to live under oppressive and communist regimes that limit movement, punish people of faith and outlaw religion.
In this grim glimpse into what the future will hold if power-drunk Democrats are able to gain a stranglehold on political power, pastors are being arrested and threats have been issued against churchgoers.
