Late Tuesday evening, a Washington, D.C. jury found Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes guilty of seditious conspiracy in connection to the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Prosectors had accused Rhodes of “fomenting a plot to force to block Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory over Trump,” Reuters reported.
One of Rhodes co-defendents, Kelly Meggs, was also found guilty of sedition conspiracy charge, while three others, Kenneth Harrelson, Jessica Watkins, and Thomas Caldwell, were all acquitted.
The eight week long trial wrapped up Tuesday evening following three days of jury deliberations.
According to US Code, seditions conspiracy is when two or more persons “conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof.”

US Code states that sentencing for this charge is a fine, less than 20 years in prison, or both.
According to CNN, Rhodes had been acquitted of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
Julie Kelly wrote on Twitter: “No American has ever been convicted of seditious conspiracy. Today a DC jury convicted Stewart Rhodes and Kelly Meggs of attempting to overthrow the U.S. government without weapons and mostly based on texts and videos.”
According to what the Associate Press is reporting, the last time a seditious conspiracy conviction was handed down was in 1995, when Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and nine others were convicted in a plot to blow up New York City landmarks.
This is a breaking and developing story and will be updated accordingly.
