Former presidential candidate Jeb Bush praised President Donald Trump on Tuesday for being gracious after the tragic death President George H.W. Bush.
While speaking at a Wall Street Journal event in Washington, D.C., the former Florida governor said Trump called him after his father passed away over the weekend and that he “couldn’t have been nicer.”
Bush also praised First Lady Melania Trump for greeting his granddaughters and other members of the Bush family on Tuesday night.
He said the first lady gave the family a tour of the White House so that they could see all of the Christmas decorations.
Bush went on to say that the Trumps were “really gracious” to the family and spoke kindly about Bush Sr.
The former governor also downplayed rumors about why Trump was not delivering the eulogy for his father.
He joked to the audience that his older brother, former President George W. Bush, had already called “first dibs.”
“What people want to talk about is, well, why isn’t the president giving the eulogy?’” he said. “It’s because we have a unique circumstance here: my brother was president.”
Bush went on to speak about his father, saying that he was “the most generous, kind person you’d ever meet,” and that he hope’s his father’s “kindler, gentler” approach would prevail over combative politics ruminating in D.C.
“Politically, it’s not winning,” he said. “But that’s not to say we shouldn’t restore it.”
