Embattled former FBI Director James Comey said Tuesday that Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, a public critic of the Mueller probe, “may not be the sharpest knife” in the drawer.

Comey made the remarks during an interview with WGBH News after he was asked whether Whitaker could potentially derail special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Comey said in the interview that Whitaker “knows that if he acted in an extralegal way, he would go down in history for the wrong reasons.”

Comey added that his legal team is reviewing options after he was subpoenaed to appear next week before a congressional committee. Comey said that he wants the hearing to be public.

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores did not return a request for comment.
