15-Year-Old Boy Died Protecting his 5-Year-Old Sister During Break-in

This is a story that we should never have to report. As a father I can’t even imagine this level of pain.

The following is from CBS12.

A 15-year-old boy was found dead after a violent encounter during a break-in, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The family said Khyler Edman died protecting his 5-year-old sister when a man broke into their home last Thursday.

Deputies responded to the area near Starlite Lane and Olean Boulevard last Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m. for reports of an injured man walking in the streets, the sheriff’s office said. When deputies arrived, the man — later identified as 27-year-old Ryan Clayton Cole — ran behind a home on Starlite Lane, crossing the canal towards Conway Boulevard.

During that time, a resident called 911 saying Cole got into his home, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies went to the home and were able to take Cole into custody after a short chase.

When he was arrested, Cole had several stab wounds on his hands and side, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

As deputies canvassed the area, they found out a burglary had happened earlier on Starlite Lane and Edman was dead in the home, according to the sheriff’s office. His little sister was found uninjured.

Deputies believe Cole was injured while inside that home during a violent encounter, the sheriff’s office said. Cole was identified in a photo lineup by the resident on Conway Boulevard.

Cole is currently facing charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling and petit theft for the incident on Conway, according to the sheriff’s office. The Starlite Lane scene is still under investigation for additional charges related to the death investigation.
