A woman from south Florida is facing criminal charges for making threats on social media to shoot Florida Republicans, Governor Ron DeSantis, Sen. Rick Scott, and Sen. Marco Rubio. Her excuse was that the politicians were looting the state.
Karen Jones, 55, a registered Democrat in Florida, was arrested at her home in South Florida last Saturday, by Palm Beach County authorities on three counts of written threats to kill or do bodily harm.
A Washington Post reporter had posted on Twitter last week about Florida potentially expanding its “stand your ground law.” In response Jones tweeted “[Ron] DeSantis, Rick Scott and Marco Rubio are looting my state. Imma shoot them,”
Jones admitted to writing the tweet in an interview with Palm Beach detectives, but said it was meant to be a joke. A detective, however, wrote in an affidavit that there was nothing suggesting the message was said in jest.
“When I made the observation that there was no commonly used terminology to show the post was a joke, we made the arrest. Jones stated that anyone who follows her knows her sense of humor,” the detective wrote.
She was booked in the local county jail and held on a $15,000 bond. Jail records show she was released on Sunday, but her public defender did not immediately respond to an email inquiry Tuesday morning.
