President Donald Trump, in a seven minute recorded speech to the United Nations, said, “We must hold accountable the nation which unleashed this plague onto the world: China. In the earliest days of the virus, China locked down traveled domestically, while allowing flights to leave China and infect the world.”
Even without an audience, he struck a belligerent tone as he laid out an “America First” vision, all underwritten by Washington’s military might. His speech contained a list of accusations against Beijing, from allowing travelers to spread what he called the “China virus” around the world to polluting the oceans.
“The Chinese government, and the World Health Organization, which is virtually controlled by China, falsely declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission and people without symptoms would not spread the disease,” Trump said. ” The United Nations must hold China accountable for their actions.” Trump added, calling on the U.N. to hold Beijing to accountability.
The president also called on other world leaders to stop criticizing America’s environmental record “while ignoring China’s rapid pollution.”
“If the United Nations is to be an effective organization, it must focus on the real problems of the world,” Trump said. “This includes terrorism, the oppression of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human and sex trafficking, religious persecution, and the ethnic cleansing of religious minorities.”
“I am proudly putting America first, just as you should be putting your country’s first,” he added. That’s OK. That’s what you should be doing.”
